The sticker trick for getting shoes on the right feet

One sticker cut in half gives toddlers an easy visual clue for matching their shoes.
What you need: one sticker and a pair of shoes.
How it works
Cut the sticker in half and put one half inside each shoe, on the insole near the heel or up the inside edge. When the shoes are placed side by side the right way round, the picture joins back together. Wrong way round, it does not.
That is the whole trick. No labels to read, no left and right to remember, just a picture to complete.
Why it helps
Left and right are abstract for a toddler. A picture is not. Instead of remembering a rule, your child just makes the picture whole, which is something they can do on their own at two or three years old.
- Mornings get quicker because you are not turning shoes round for the third time.
- Your child gets a small, real win, and independence at the shoe rack tends to spread to coats and bags.
- It costs nothing. Any sticker you already have will do.
No sticker?
Draw half a simple shape inside each shoe with a permanent marker. A heart, a circle or a smiley face works well, split down the middle. Coloured tape cut in half does the job too.
Making it stick
- Pick a sticker your child likes so they want to check it. Dinosaurs, unicorns and their own initial all work.
- Put it somewhere visible when the shoes are lined up, not hidden under the tongue.
- Check it every few weeks and replace it when it starts to peel.
- Let your child cut the sticker (with supervision) so the trick feels like theirs.
Frequently asked questions
What age does the sticker trick work from?
As soon as your child is trying to put their own shoes on, usually somewhere around two to three years old. It stays useful until left and right click on their own.
Will the sticker come off?
Eventually, yes. Wipe-clean shoe insoles and daily wear will wear it down. Keep the other stickers from the sheet and replace it when the picture starts to fade.
Does it work on wellies and trainers?
Yes. Anything with an insole or an inside wall you can stick to. It works especially well on wellies, which are the shoes toddlers most often get the wrong way round.
