One change to how socks go into the wash, and you stop losing them.
The rule
Socks go into the machine already paired, not loose. A small mesh laundry bag or a clip keeps each pair together through the wash and the dryer, so they come out as a pair and go straight back in the drawer.
The reason socks vanish is not the machine eating them. It is that they are separated at the point they go in, and one of the two ends up in somebody else’s pile.
Making it stick
Put the mesh bag in the laundry basket itself rather than by the machine. Children old enough to undress themselves can drop their socks straight into it, which is the whole habit in one step.
One bag per person works better than one big bag, especially if you have two children in similar sizes.
What to do with the odd ones
- Keep an odd sock box for one wash cycle only, then pair up what you can.
- Anything still single after a month is unlikely to reappear.
- Odd socks are useful for dusting, and small ones make good sleeves for water bottles.

Yes. Do not overfill them, leave room for water to move, and socks come out as clean as they would loose.
What about tumble drying?
Leave them in the bag through the dryer too. That is where most of the separating happens.
Is it worth buying identical socks?
